Average AE Quota

Average AE quota is the median annual new-business target assigned to account executives in a given segment and ACV band, used to benchmark compensation fairness, territory quality, and headcount-to-revenue projections.

What Average AE Quota Is

Average AE quota is the median new-business target assigned to account executives across a defined cohort — segmented by deal size, vertical, or go-to-market segment. It is the number recruiters put in job postings, the number candidates Google before accepting an offer, and the number finance uses to project how much revenue a new AE headcount will generate in year one.

The number matters because quota is the denominator for quota attainment, the input to OTE math, and the starting point for sales capacity planning. Set it too high and fewer reps hit, comp costs drop, and attrition follows. Set it too low and you overpay for output.

How Average AE Quota Is Calculated

Two versions exist: mean and median. Use median.

Mean: Sum of all AE quotas ÷ headcount. Distorted by one or two strategic or named-account reps carrying $3M+ targets alongside a team where everyone else carries $700k.

Median: The middle value in a sorted list of quotas. Reflects the typical AE target without outlier contamination.

Both must be segmented before they mean anything:

Segment ACV Band 2026 Median AE Quota (B2B SaaS)
SMB < $10k $400k – $600k
Mid-Market $10k – $75k $750k – $1.1M
Enterprise $75k – $250k $1.2M – $2M
Strategic / Named $250k+ $2M – $5M+

These figures reflect annual new-business quotas — they exclude renewal and expansion unless the AE owns both motions.

Worked Example

A 14-person mid-market team carries a combined $15.4M in annual quota. Two reps assigned to enterprise pilots carry $2.5M each; the remaining 12 average $866k. Mean across all 14: $1.1M. Median across all 14: $875k. Report the $1.1M to a candidate and you've set a false expectation about the role they're actually joining.

The correct approach: strip out segment outliers, compute median for the cohort the candidate is entering, and compare to peer data for that ACV band specifically.

Who Uses Average AE Quota — and Why It Matters

Finance uses it to build headcount-to-revenue projections. Each new AE hire is modeled as ramp time months of near-zero production, then median quota × expected attainment rate for the remainder of the year.

RevOps compares internal quotas to external benchmarks to flag whether quota-setting is grounded in market reality. A $1.5M mid-market quota where 22% of reps attain tells a different story than the same number where 68% attain.

Recruiters use average AE quota in job postings as a signal of territory health. Candidates use it to pressure-test whether the role is winnable before signing an offer letter.

AEs use it as negotiating leverage. A rep asked to carry 40% above the segment median has a quantified argument, not a vague complaint.

What Average AE Quota Doesn't Tell You

The number in isolation is almost useless. A $1M quota where 70% of reps hit it is a fair number. A $1M quota where 28% hit it is a design choice — comp costs compress because most reps earn below OTE, attrition clears the roster, and the company replaces departing reps with new hires who restart the ramp clock. This is sometimes deliberate.

The manipulation pattern: finance inflates quota to suppress on-target-earnings payouts. Higher quota, same attainment rate, less commission paid as a percent of revenue. The counter is reading percent of reps at quota alongside the quota figure — attainment distribution tells you whether the number is designed to be hit or designed to be missed.

A second blind spot: average quota ignores territory quality. Two AEs can carry identical $900k quotas — one in a greenfield territory with 200 target accounts and no incumbent, one in a coverage-gapped patch with 40 accounts and three competitors already contracted. The benchmark looks the same. The job is not.
